Overcoming Challenges and Discovering Your Story Through Reading

January 15, 2024

In our busy world filled with distractions and a constant flow of information, the joy of reading sometimes gets overlooked. But there’s something truly magical about cracking open a book. It’s not just a simple act; it’s a quiet adventure that can transform the way we think and feel. The books we pick become like friends on our personal journey of growth. They share wisdom about life, offer comfort when times are tough, and sprinkle insights into the human experience. Reading isn’t just a pastime; it’s a chance to pause and ponder, helping us understand ourselves and the world. It’s a spark for creativity, a boost for curiosity, and a key ingredient for a vibrant, fulfilling life.

There was a time for me when reading felt like trying to decipher ancient hieroglyphics on a bumpy rollercoaster. The letters danced, morphed, and swapped places on the page, mocking my desperate attempts to string them into something meaningful. Dyslexia had convinced me that I was destined to avoid books, forever held back from the wisdom contained within those black lines. There came a point in my career—in my life—where I wanted that creativity, that connection with an author’s story, and the knowledge that books contain. I decided that I wouldn’t tolerate any more excuses. I have dyslexia, and I can’t change that. But I can give myself tools to overcome it. Tools like audio books, large print editions, and the combination of reading while listening to the book I’m reading.

Perhaps you’re facing a challenge, or maybe you’re the underdog in your story. I want to encourage you that you are an overcomer. Don’t back down from the difficult, but embrace hard things because after it’s developed character, you’ll be stronger and more resilient than ever.

There have been many lessons that I’ve learned from reading. I’ve learned commitment, seeing a book through to it’s end; I’ve learned discipline, reading every morning; and I learned countless things from the books themselves. But perhaps the greatest lesson I’ve learned from reading, is that I too have a story. Because I have lived a story.
